When it came to thinking about creating new work for our upcoming exhibition ‘Material dialogues’ to be held at St.Margarets Art Centre in Norwich, a swirl of ideas came to mind.
Unfortunately I did not feel comfortable with my initial concept!
So after more thought and research, a fascination for the many terms and phrases that we use in everyday life that are drawn from the textile industry of years gone by developed. Finally choosing to focus on ‘Cut from the same cloth’
Starting with a single length of cotton fabric which I dyed and printed before cutting up to use as the basis for all the pieces, both 2-D and 3-D.
I have chosen to use a linking colour palette and repeating motifs to create a unity throughout, with the addition of hand and machine stitching, minimal additional fabric and wire for details and embellishment.
The aim was to give each piece its own identity whilst maintaining linking elements, just as a members of a family unit share similarities but are unique individuals in their own right.
Please do come along and visit the exhibition on 23rd September – 4th October
