Out Of The Fold

Penny Evans

Penny is an award-winning fibre artist who loves experimenting with wet felt, for its textural and structural properties.  Her work ranges from the delicate and fragile where paper is incorporated with a fine layer of wool, to structural felt pieces whose strength is derived from the wool itself.  Both equally beautiful.

Penny’s inspiration is drawn from the natural world. Her daily walks in the Norfolk countryside, taking time out from daily routine, allows her to think about the landscape she sees.   Stopping to ask what has shaped the land we walk on; observing the changing seasons; reflecting on man’s activity. She often returns with a phone full of photos and a pocketful of ‘finds’, which inspire her and are sometimes used in pieces of work.

“Wet felting is a slow meditative process laying down wool fibre, adding water, a little heat and applying gentle agitation. This alchemy forms a new textile much stronger than the sum of its parts”
