Members of Out of the Fold have selected ‘Material Dialogues’ as the theme for our exhibition in 2026
The title is inspiring us all. How do materials speak? What stories can they tell – not just about their own form or function but through time, texture and transformation? These materials might include mixed media – wood, metal, plastic or paper, as well as fabrics. What messages can materials carry in our art?
Out of the Fold members are also working in a new way for this series of work – collaboration. At our January meeting names were drawn at random to form pairs. Members have been challenged to work in pairs, create a dialogue, and produce work for the exhibition. Challenging. Exciting.
Some ideas on how couples may work together
– make a single joint piece
– use a common material to make separate work
– both provide materials for shared use
– make work then cut it in half
– make work and swap during the process, either once or several times
– introduce another material during the making
