Knowing your Space by Mary McIntosh

Out of the Fold members create a new body of work each year on a theme chosen by the group. Sometimes we know where the exhibition will be held, and even have the venue booked in advance. We exhibit every other year at The Guildhall in Bury St Edmunds and know the space well. The size of the boards, the lighting, the beautiful Georgian tables. This makes it easier for each artist to plan the dimension and form of their work to be shown to best advantage in the space.

In 2025 Out of the Fold had another opportunity to display work in a spectacular setting – the ballroom at The Minories gallery in Colchester as part of the ArtConTex event. We were allocated a lovely long white wall, with high ceilings, and lots of natural light streaming into the room.

It was with both of these venues in mind that we decided to make LARGE pieces of work all the same size, to measure 40cm x 150cm (16″ x 60″) and to display these all in portrait format on the same stretcher frames. This is much more restrictive than our usual working practice and most of our members found the making of these large pieces quite challenging. But the end result is spectacular. Ten glorious works of textile art.

You can see the ‘Reflections’ series at artcontex The Minories, 74 High Street, Colchester CO1 1UE from 2nd – 5th October 2025. 10am – 4pm each day. Free entry.

The series will be shown again in 2026, along with the next new body of work, at a venue as yet unknown. Watch this space…………
