Nicola’s inspirations for our exhibition ‘Reflections’ comes from her time spent in China. Standing on the Great Wall and looking out away from the crowds and to the mountains beyond. Stopping and blocking out the noise and looking across the empty valley as the wall snakes across the mountains. Also her time spent in the city parks, noticing the shadows on the ground from the peace tree.
The piece also reflects her work over the past year of using natural dyes, natural fibres and recycled items. The blue coming from fresh indigo leaves, the golden and dark browns from Coreopsis Tinctoria. Pressed sycamore leaves have been hand stitched on, with waste sari skills made into cordage showing the outline of the shadows. This piece embraces Nicola’s love of nature and working with nature to create her work, accepting change within the piece as nature changes.
