Gulumada Manamarra by Frances Overy

Remembering and reflecting on a visit to Australia, Frances responds to the vastness of the country, the contrasts between the urban and rural and how some aspects of changes affect the population and communities, especially those of the first nation.

Inspired by the work of Judy Watson*  Frances moves, in this piece, from Sydney Harbour beyond the Blue Mountains to the interior, from the greys of industry and transport to earth colours using stitch in the assembled then dyed fabrics.

*  Judy Watson is an Australian Waanyi multi-media artist who works in print-making, painting, video and installation. Her work often examines Indigenous Australian histories.  She is one of Australia’s most globally collected and exhibited artists.  Frances Overy was introduced to her work when viewing the ”mununama kundana wandaraba jarribirri” exhibition at the Queensland Art Gallery, Brisbane.
