Starling by Heather Evans

The end is  finally in sight. For the past 8 months or so, I have been preparing my exhibition pieces for our upcoming Out of the Fold exhibition: Reflections.

My inspiration for the exhibition pieces, was a photo my husband took of a Felixstowe Starling. The starlings love to hop about at the View Point cafe, displaying their stunning iridescent  plumage, how could I resist such a spectacular colourful display.

As a group we were all given a tall canvas frame 60” x 16” and I had a hare-brained idea that I would hand stitch my piece. It seemed like a good idea in the beginning.

Well after many months, of listening to podcasts and stabbed fingers, it is finally finished and hopefully it reflects the colours and reflective quality of the feathers.

As a companion piece I have been trying to use up fabrics I have in my stash, I have made many feathers from scraps of organzas. I really like the different shades and tones you can create from combining layers of colours,

All our group have been working on their own interpretations of Reflections and I am sure all the pieces together will be very impressive and all very different.

There will be two opportunities to see our work:

Reflection: 23-28th September, 2025, Bury St Edmunds Guildhall.

ArtConTex: 2-5th October 2025, The Minories, Colchester
